Production Flow Visibility & Control
Spartan Dynamics Implementation at a Major West Coast Flour Milling Operation
Background
This confidential client is a major flour milling operation on the West Coast, processing wheat into flour products for large-scale commercial distribution. The operation involves a complex flow of raw grain arriving from multiple sources, being processed and blended across multiple mill streams, and leaving as finished flour product — with significant financial and quality implications tied to accurate tracking at every stage.
The Challenge
The facility lacked a centralized system to track product movement across its operation. Without real-time visibility into what was coming in, where it was being used, and what was leaving, the mill faced several compounding operational problems:
- No reliable, real-time view of grain inflow rates or quantities from receiving
- No centralized tracking of how product was being routed and consumed across mill streams during processing
- No accurate, automated measurement of finished product leaving the facility — making yield calculations labor-intensive and prone to error
- Without flow visibility, load imbalances across the milling system went undetected until they affected output quality or caused equipment stress
- Production reporting relied on manual data entry, introducing delays, inconsistencies, and gaps in records needed for QC auditing and management decisions
The result was a facility operating largely on estimates and manual recordkeeping — with limited ability to identify waste, optimize yield, or respond quickly to process deviations. Management lacked the reporting tools needed to make data-driven decisions about plant performance.
The Solution
Logic Control Systems implemented Spartan Dynamics — LCS's proprietary production monitoring and control platform — to give the facility complete, real-time visibility into product flow from mill receiving through processing to loadout, along with the reporting and analysis tools needed to act on that data.
Flow Monitoring & Scale Integration
Spartan Dynamics interfaces directly with the facility's scales and measured devices throughout the production process — capturing inflow, in-process, and outflow data automatically. Operators and managers can see, in real time, exactly what product is entering the plant, how it is moving through each stage of the milling process, and what is leaving as finished product.
This continuous measurement eliminates the need for manual tracking and provides the accurate, time-stamped flow data needed to calculate true yield on input — identifying where waste occurs and quantifying it precisely.
Automatic Load Balancing
Spartan continuously monitors multiple components throughout the milling cycle and automatically adjusts infeed to optimize yield and plant load balance. When the system detects a potential flow interruption or imbalance, it alerts operators immediately — allowing corrections before problems escalate.
Recipe-Driven Production
The facility can define unlimited products and recipes within Spartan, with each recipe specifying exact parameters for that production run. Once set, Spartan manages the run against those definitions — ensuring consistent output quality regardless of which operator is on shift.
Reporting & Management Visibility
Spartan generates a full suite of dynamic reports automatically, eliminating the manual data collection and compilation that previously burdened operators and supervisors:
- Production run reports capturing quantities, rates, and performance metrics for every run
- Shift reports enabling supervisors to review output by work period
- Miller and micro ingredient reports for detailed process tracking
- Managerial production summaries giving leadership the data needed for plant optimization decisions
- Real-time and historical flow charts for visualizing trends and identifying anomalies
- QC audit logs maintained automatically for every production event
Remote Access & Alarm Management
Spartan provides full remote access from PC, phone, or tablet — allowing supervisors and managers to monitor plant status, review reports, and receive and clear alarms from anywhere. In-process alarms notify the right people immediately when conditions require attention, reducing response time and minimizing unplanned downtime.
Spartan Dynamics has been running continuously at this facility since 2015 — more than 11 years of uninterrupted production monitoring. It remains the operational backbone of the plant's production tracking and reporting today.

Results & Impact
The Spartan Dynamics implementation transformed how this facility understands and manages its production process:
- Complete, real-time visibility into product flow — from grain receiving through milling to finished product loadout — replacing manual estimates with accurate, automated measurement
- True yield-on-input calculation is now continuous and automatic, enabling the facility to identify and quantify waste precisely
- Automatic load balancing reduces equipment stress and improves output consistency by catching imbalances before they affect product quality
- Production, shift, and managerial reports are generated automatically — eliminating hours of manual data entry and giving management reliable data for optimization decisions
- Recipe-driven production ensures consistent output quality across operators and shifts
- Remote monitoring and alarm management means supervisors are never out of touch with plant status
- More than 15 years of continuous operation demonstrates the platform's reliability and the client's confidence in it as a long-term operational foundation
